An MLA block quote is set on a new line, indented 0.5 inches, with no quotation marks. To format a block quote in MLA : Introduce the quote with a colon and set it on a new line. Indent the whole quote 0.5 inches from the left margin. Place the MLA in-text citation after the period at the end of the block quote .
Basics Block quotations start on their own line. The entire block quotation is indented 0.5 inches, the same as the indentation for a new paragraph, and is double spaced. Block quotations are not surrounded by any quotation marks. The punctuation at the end of the block quotation goes before the citation .
In-text citations include the last name of the author followed by a page number enclosed in parentheses. “Here’s a direct quote ” (Smith 8). If the author’s name is not given, then use the first word or words of the title. Follow the same formatting that was used in the Works Cited list, such as quotation marks.
The block quotes should always be indented and be started off in a new line. Block quotations can also be formatted in italics for the reader to identify them easily.
Create a header in the upper right-hand corner that includes your last name, followed by a space with a page number. Number all pages consecutively with Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.), one-half inch from the top and flush with the right margin.
APA requires 40 words or more in order to use a block quote . You should indent the whole quote ½ inch (MLA 1 inch). You do not need to enclose the block quote in quotation marks. Make sure that the block quote is double-spaced.
Long quotations Place direct quotations that are 40 words or longer in a free-standing block of typewritten lines and omit quotation marks. Start the quotation on a new line, indented 1/2 inch from the left margin, i.e., in the same place you would begin a new paragraph.
Quoting a portion of dialogue : If you quote something a character says, use double quotation marks on the outside ends of the quotation to indicate that you are quoting a portion of the text. Use single quotation marks inside the double quotation marks to indicate that someone is speaking. “‘Thou art not my child!
In block format , the entire text is left aligned and single spaced. The exception to the single spacing is a double space between paragraphs (instead of indents for paragraphs). Rule: Use single quotation marks inside double quotation marks when you have a quotation within a quotation . Example: Bobbi told me, “Delia said, ‘This will never work. ‘ ” Notice that what Delia said was enclosed in single quotation marks.
If you want to omit some words, phrases, or sentences from the quote to save space, use an ellipsis (. . .) with a space before and after it to indicate that some material has been left out . If the part you removed includes a sentence break, add a period before the ellipsis to indicate this.

A block quote is always used when quoting dialogue between characters, as in a play. The block format is a freestanding quote that does not include quotation marks. Indent the entire quote 1-inch from the left margin and double-space it (even if the rest of your paper is not double-spaced).

DON’T use a block quote for any quoted segment that is both less than three full lines of text in the editing interface and fewer than five sentences. This is pretty much what I just said in No. 2, but it’s nice to alternate between dos and don’ts for effect.
