Time as we think of it isn’t innate to the natural world; it’s a manmade construct intended to describe, monitor, and control industry and individual production.
Isaac Newton said that we are merely occupying time , he also says that humans can only understand relative time . Relative time is a measurement of objects in motion. The anti-realists believed that time is merely a convenient intellectual concept for humans to understand events. Time is not an empirical concept .
The measurement of time began with the invention of sundials in ancient Egypt some time prior to 1500 B.C. However, the time the Egyptians measured was not the same as the time today’s clocks measure. For the Egyptians , and indeed for a further three millennia, the basic unit of time was the period of daylight.
Time is one of the most basic examples of something that is socially constructed. To say that something, like time , is a social construction is not to say that it doesn’t exist or it is merely an illusion, but instead that humans have created systems of meaning that creates the concept of time .
The past and future do not exist and are only concepts used to describe the real, isolated, and changing present. This conventional model presents a number of difficult philosophical problems, and seems difficult to reconcile with currently accepted scientific theories such as the theory of relativity.
The world as we know it has three dimensions of space—length, width and depth—and one dimension of time. But there’s the mind-bending possibility that many more dimensions exist out there. According to string theory, one of the leading physics model of the last half century, the universe operates with 10 dimensions .
But in the 106 years since Einstein, the prevailing view in physics has been that time serves as the fourth dimension of space, an arena represented mathematically as 4D Minkowski spacetime.
The concept of time is self-evident. An hour consists of a certain number of minutes, a day of hours and a year of days. Time is represented through change, such as the circular motion of the moon around Earth. The passing of time is indeed closely connected to the concept of space.
While most people think of time as a constant, physicist Albert Einstein showed that time is an illusion; it is relative — it can vary for different observers depending on your speed through space. Time provides another coordinate — direction — although conventionally, it only moves forward.
One way of seeing this is to recognize that the notion of “ present ,” as sandwiched between past and future, is simply a useful hoax. After all, if the present is a moment in time without duration, it can’t exist . What does exist is the recent memory of the immediate past and the expectation of the near future.
According to theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli, time is an illusion : our naive perception of its flow doesn’t correspond to physical reality. He posits that reality is just a complex network of events onto which we project sequences of past, present and future.
Temporal finitism is the doctrine that time is finite in the past. The philosophy of Aristotle, expressed in such works as his Physics, held that although space was finite , with only void existing beyond the outermost sphere of the heavens, time was infinite .
Concepts are defined as abstract ideas or general notions that occur in the mind, in speech, or in thought. They are understood to be the fundamental building blocks of thoughts and beliefs. Concepts as mental representations, where concepts are entities that exist in the mind (mental objects)
Illusion , a misrepresentation of a “real” sensory stimulus—that is, an interpretation that contradicts objective “reality” as defined by general agreement. An illusion is distinguished from a hallucination, an experience that seems to originate without an external source of stimulation.
The further quantum physicists peer into the nature of reality , the more evidence they are finding that everything is energy at the most fundamental levels. Reality is merely an illusion , although a very persistent one. What else can we do in the face of what scientists have discovered about reality ? It’s unbelievable!
