Character information Merlin is the deuteragonist of Disney’s 1963 animated feature film, The Sword in the Stone. He is a powerful wizard that tasks himself in educating a young boy named Arthur .
The sword of St Galgano, said to have been plunged into a rock by a medieval Tuscan knight, has been authenticated, bolstering Italy’s version of the Excalibur legend. For centuries the sword was assumed to be a fake.
The 14th century sword was discovered at in the Vrbas River, near the village of Rakovice in the north of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Driven into a solid bit of rock 36ft below the surface and becoming stuck for years in water – the sword has now been dubbed ‘ Excalibur ‘ after the legendary tale of King Arthur.

There is a sudden stirring in the churchyard, and the Wart sees a congregation of his old animal friends. With their encouragement, the Wart pulls the sword from the stone with ease.

There was a famous sword in Irish legend called Caladbolg , from which Excalibur is evidently derived by way of Geoffrey of Monmouth , whose Historia regum Britanniae refers to Arthur’s sword as Caliburn . Malory says that Excalibur means “cut-steel.”
