‘Though she be but little she is fierce’ is a quote from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, spoken by Helena in act 3, scene 2, referring to her friend Hermia .
“O, when she is angry, she is keen and shrewd. She was a vixen when she went to school, And though she be but little , she is fierce.” ( 3.2.323-325) Hermia is full of untapped strength, and it is a further symbol of how well-rounded her character is that she chooses to remain kind and gentle to those around her.
There have been lots of times reading Shakespeare when I’ve felt seen, but this much-quoted line of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (III. ii. 335) really hits the nail on the head. Hermia has told Helena that she ( Hermia ) is going to elope with Lysander. She is doing this to avoid having to marry Demetrius. But Helena loves Demetrius and wants his approval. So the reason why she betrays Hermia’s trust is because she thinks that will make Demetrius like her ( Helena ) better.

Quote by William Shakespeare: “Though she be but little , she is fierce!”
Lesson Summary At various points throughout Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hermia is a fearful, hopeful, bewildered, and joyful character. Her father , Egeus, and the king, Theseus, tell her that her only choices are to marry the smug Demetrius, become a nun, or die.
Shakespeare directs this quote to those who allow life to happen. Shakespeare criticizes those kinds of people by saying the outcome of our lives is based on our own actions instead of by fate or the stars . That is what this Shakespeare quote truly means .
