Insert Quotes using Google Docs Research Tool Open your piece of writing in Google Docs . Place the cursor in the document where you would like to insert a quote . According to the APA manual, quotations that are 40 words or more are considered block quotations and are formatted differently than regular quotations . The entire block quotation is indented 0.5 inches, the same as the indentation for a new paragraph, and is double spaced.

“ Smart quotes ” are the ideal form of quotation marks and apostrophes, and are commonly curly or sloped. “Dumb quotes ,” or straight quotes , are a vestigial constraint from typewriters when using one key for two different marks helped save space on a keyboard.
For quotations that are more than four lines of prose or three lines of verse, place quotations in a free-standing block of text and omit quotation marks.
Block quotations are only used if the text is longer than 40 words (APA) or four lines (MLA). Double space all lines. Do not add an extra space before or after the block quote. Unlike quotes integrated into your text, block quotes do not need quotation marks.
In block format , the entire text is left aligned and single spaced. The exception to the single spacing is a double space between paragraphs (instead of indents for paragraphs). This is occurring because something called “smart quotes ” is currently enabled. But default quotation marks are more vertical and that, and won’t have the curling effect that some people seem to prefer. Google Docs makes this curling pattern the default setting, but you are able to turn it off if you don’t want it.
